Do you remember your favorite book from childhood?
– WordPress Prompt
The first book I thoroughly enjoyed and thought about long afterwards was called, Pond Life by Golden Guides. The Golden Guides published a series of informational and illustrated hard cover books. The illustrations were so well done that they look almost identical to how specific types of animals actually look, if you were to see them in real life. I remember how my brain was still developing, and how facinated i was, although i couldn’t speak this, i was amazed by how identical the images looked in comparison to real life. I’d spend the early part of my childhood daydreaming of how that’s possible to have something inside of a book, look like something else, without having that actual something be right in front of you. Life-like drawings in story books were more than accepted in my nightly line up of bedtime short stories. As i write the line above this one, a cynical version of the voice in my head starts listing titles of world renown, life altering books that have been written and published throughout human existance. Only instead of listing the specific titles, my inner critic is using a mumbling groan noise instead of words…
So, I typed the words “world renown, life altering books that have been written and published throughout human existence” into my search bar, moments later a large detailed list of published works appeared.
It’s interesting to see similarly, many many years ago. the book “On the Origin of Species – by Charles Darwin (1859) was written. I also see, “Silent Spring” – by Rachel Carson (1962).
A faint memory of being in grade school comes flooding into my immediate mind… I remember, in order to “graduate” from the 8th grade to go into the high school onto 9th grade we had to pick a historian/ idle, of someone who was incredibly impactful in human kind and act like them for one entire day and deliver reports on yourself to multiple classrooms- the entire school! Many months lead up to this day… much classroom time was purely spent on “preparing for your report and each day that wen’t by all i could think of being was Barnem from Barnem and Bailey’s Circus while my best friend would be Bailey.
My grandmother said, if she could be anyone for a day, to report on, it would be the greatness of Rachel Carson. I wore olive green Wellie Boots from L.L.Beans, a tan utility type colored button down shirt with a bug/butterfly net.
